The Falmouth Road Race is considered one of the most iconic road races in the United States.[1] Taking place in late August, its unique distance of 7 miles presents a logistically challenging problem for athlete support during and after the race. Athletes are able to compete at a high level throughout the duration of the race; historically resulting in elevated heat related illnesses and heat stroke.[2]
With a historical average of 72ºF and 77% humidity at the race start, expect temperatures to be hot but bearable. The forecast is more favorable than historical averages with the extreme heat of the next few days breaking just in time for race day. With cloud cover predicted to be at just about 50% and no rain on the horizon, expect a mild southerly wind to result in a fast race from start to finish.
While conditions are predicted to be favorable, the nature of the 7 mile race, along with typical New England summertime temperatures, warrant proper hydration before, throughout, and after the race. Water stations in 2021 will be available approximately every 1-2 miles with no COVID restrictions.
